Balranald lies between the western edge of the Murrumbidgee irrigation scheme and the romantic outback destinations of ‘Hay, Hell and Booligal’ – in fact the property known as ‘Hell’s Gate’ lies only 50km west of the town. Balranald’s main industries include the grape growing and tourism. Heritage Park at the entrance to the town has tourist information facilities as well as a number of interesting historic buildings. Balranald is an ideal place for anglers. Both the river and a number of nearby lakes are well stocked with Yellow-Belly, Murray Cod, Redfin and Carp. Balranald has two race meetings per year that are a ‘must-see’ the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup or Victorian Derby Day and the Balranald Cup in February/March each year.
